With 40% of the Potomac watershed in severe drought conditions, the region's water supply is at risk. The Metropolitan Council of Governments' Drought Coordination Committee has stepped in to increase coordination and monitoring, but it's up to us to do our part.
The situation is dire, but there's a silver lining. The region's upstream reservoirs are over 99% full, a testament to decades of planning and coordination. However, this also means that the last time water was released due to drought-related conditions was in 2010. We can't afford to wait for another crisis to hit.
The ICPRB has released valuable tips for water conservation, and it's up to us to follow them. Prioritizing outdoor watering, checking for leaks, and using water-efficient appliances are just a few ways we can make a difference. The region's last mandatory water use restrictions happened in 1999, and we don't want to go back there.
As we head into the summer and fall months, when river flows are typically lower, we need to be mindful of our water usage. The Potomac River's Washington Aqueduct is the source of drinking water for D.C., and we need to protect it. The same goes for Alexandria's drinking water supply, which is sourced from the Potomac River and the Occoquan Reservoir.
In my opinion, the drought watch declaration is a call to action. We need to take responsibility for our water usage and do our part to conserve. The future of our water supply depends on it. As Michael Nardolilli, executive director of the ICPRB, said, 'As we go into the summer and fall months, when river flows are typically lower, residents are urged to use water wisely.' Let's heed that call and do our part to protect our precious water resources.
